Some shower thoughts after a great Q&A between @nayafia and @eriktorenberg tonight: Main line that stuck with me: "People don't have ideas. Ideas have people." /// —— Other stuffs —— /// 1. Lots to say on antimemetics and group cohesion. Agree with Erik that conflict theory often wins over mistake theory. (Also see schismogenesis, agonistic democracy, etc. as other pointers towards mistake theory.) 2. And in mistake theory, groups cohere around conformism, not truth. - "If we all think alike, no one is thinking." - "Groups search for consensus, individuals search for truth." 3. Within a group, doubt is antimemetic. There is selection for agreement. Some things become untalkaboutable. (While conversely, supermemes are convogenic.) 4. But truth eventually seeps out. Or rather, groups subdivide into cohesive units that align along some vector of truthiness. (See Erik's points on group chats as a vehicle for this.) 5. But thus far we're really just talking about group behavior. (Anti)memetics is more generally about selection for high-fitness replicators that live on an anthropological substrate. 6. One of the most difficult parts of analyzing memetics is that it is the water we swim in and is multilevel. Brand's Pace Layers, Meadows' Leverage Points, Hodgson's Evolutionary Economics stack, Bennett's Intelligence Layers, Roberts' Six Faces of Globalization, Fukuyama's Political Evolution, etc. 7. We're still at the beginning of memetics as a science. Imagine someone saying X is genetic or X is antigenetic in biology. Like, of course something is genetic! It's the whole replicator. So we're not yet good at the things biology has done in the last 150 years since Darwin: initial evolutionary theory, the modern synthesis, molecular genetics, extended evolutionary synthesis, etc. 8. What we've mostly done thus far is evolutionary history of X. Of morality, religion, technology, etc. This is a good start. 9. ...One of the antimemetic things I'm most annoyed by these days is mesofacts (h/t Sam Arbesman). Noahpinion tries to debunk them regularly. Service costs aren't rising, undergrad jobs aren't being taken by AI, etc. But he's fighting an uphill fight. Stories are sticky. St Louis Fed Graphs are not. /// Anywho, glad Nadia is helping antimemetics become more memetic! And glad there are containers like SF, DFC, etc. where ideas like these can form consensus before they break containment :)
