Analyzing the surge within the Nordic startup landscape

Last week, the ever-energetic Slush conference returned to Helsinki, once again highlighting the increasing influence of Europe’s tech scene.

The Nordic region, and Sweden in particular, is currently in the spotlight, thanks in part to the buzz around Lovable, a Swedish company often cited as proof of the area’s rising achievements. Other notable, though more established, names from the region include Klarna and Spotify.

On this episode of Equity, we interviewed Dennis Green-Lieber, who founded the AI startup Propane, to discuss the Nordic region’s impressive momentum. Based in Denmark, Green-Lieber has spent the last decade and a half contributing to the local tech landscape.

He attributed the region’s achievements to several factors, such as the strong social safety net that allows young entrepreneurs to take chances without the fear of total loss.

“The latest wave of founders, this new generation, is far more confident and taking charge,” he shared on Equity. “In my 15 years here, I’ve never witnessed anything quite like what’s happening now.”

The Nordics are quickly becoming a center for deep tech and artificial intelligence, according to a recent report, with the ecosystem now worth $500 billion. In 2024 alone, startups from the region secured just over $8 billion in venture capital. Government support is also significant, with public funding helping entrepreneurs like Green-Lieber expand their businesses.

Green-Lieber acknowledges that, in some respects, the region may be a bit behind the curve—but he also noted, “our progress is now accelerating at an incredible pace.”

Before wrapping up, the discussion turned to artificial intelligence. When asked if the sector was experiencing a bubble, Green-Lieber admitted uncertainty. “There are still many untapped opportunities,” he observed, while also noting that some investments are risky or misguided, but “that’s simply part of the venture capital game.”
