Fan Tokens™ Set to Fight It Out in World Cup Quarterfinals

From a starting lineup of 48 nations, just eight remain in contention for the 2026 World Cup: holders Argentina, FIFA’s top-ranked country France, European champions Spain, England, Morocco, and Belgium (all ranked in the top ten), Switzerland, and Norway.

Argentina On Course But Living Dangerously

Argentina maintained their 100% win record at the 2026 World Cup by beating Egypt 3-2 in the round-of-16 on July 7.

For the second game in a row, the holders were dragged into a life-or-death battle with a nation expected to be fodder, following their late win over Cape Verde on July 3.

Captain Lionel Messi, widely considered the football GOAT, scored in both games, bringing his tally to eight from just five games.

Despite missing a penalty in the Egypt clash, Messi now tops the World Cup goalscoring charts (2026 tournament and all-time), and he’s also the only player in history to score in six consecutive knockout games (four in 2022, two in 2026).

As far as the Argentine Football Association Fan Token ($ARG) is concerned, the topsy-turvy nature of recent wins has failed to inspire much confidence that they can go all the way, Messi’s wizardry notwithstanding.

The prevailing perception seems to be that if they can’t conclusively beat Cape Verde and Egypt, Argentina don’t stand much of a chance against the mighty France or Spain in the final. Indeed, the jury’s out on whether they would defeat their likely semifinal opponents, England or Norway.

All of which is to say that despite five wins causing five consecutive token burns as part of Chiliz’ Burn to Glory campaign, $ARG is yet to truly break out, despite trade volumes remaining high.

Having already caused 97,850 $ARG to be destroyed from its treasury, Argentina can trigger another burn – of 5% of treasury holdings – by beating Switzerland in the quarterfinal (July 12).

Despite the mood around $ARG being uncertain, those who believe Messi can continue his goalscoring exploits, and fire Argentina to the final, may see value in entering their positions while the market is bearish.

Spain vs Belgium After Portugal Exit

On the opposite side of the draw from Argentina is Spain ($SPAIN), who knocked out Portugal in the last-16 on July 6, and thus ended any lingering hopes of a fairytale Argentina vs Portugal (Messi vs Ronaldo) final.

An injury-time winner from substitute Mikel Merino torched the notion of a storybook showpiece, and ended 41-year-old captain Ronaldo’s World Cup ambitions once and for all.

The value of the Portugal National Team Fan Token™ ($POR) slid sharply following the defeat, falling from $0.123 prematch to $0.084 two days later (31.7%). Traders with a long time horizon may look ahead to Portugal’s defence of its Nations League title next year, with Ronaldo’s participation uncertain.

As for Spain, they can now eye another Fan Token™ derby against Belgium ($BELG) in the quarterfinals (July 10). While the European champions are favourites, Belgium – ranked 8th by FIFA – were imperious last time out, destroying co-hosts USA 4-1 in Seattle.

Belgium’s so-called Golden Generation of players are nearing the end of their careers, so the 2026 World Cup may be the last realistic chance for De Bruyne, Lukaku, Courtois, Witsel, and Meunier to win a major trophy.

The other quarterfinals, incidentally, are between nations without a digital asset: France play Morocco (July 9) while England meet Norway (July 11).

Who Will Make It to the World Cup Final?

With at least one Fan Token™ nation on either side of the draw, SportFi traders will continue speculating on their prospects, particularly given the escalating burn rate.

If bookmakers are to be believed, both Argentina and Spain will make it to the last four, where they are likely to face serious tests against England and France respectively, having triggered another 5% token burn.
