  • David Schwartz discussed XRPL programmability during a recent X space.
  • XRPL programmability will enable permissionless customization.
  • The development will allow customized business logic on the XRPL.

Ripple’s CTO David Schwartz hosted X Spaces to talk about XRPL programmability. The AMA session gave XRP community members the chance to ask questions about the development of EVM sidechains and Ripple’s exploration of native smart contracts on XRPL.

Key takeaways from Schwartz’s XRPL programmability AMA included community members’ questions about issues they’ve faced with the blockchain protocol or other similar projects. The open format of the AMA allowed Schwartz to address any questions or concerns participants had.

One community member brought up a problem with layer 2 EVM sidechains, noting that they could adjust fee parameters on layer 2 for users based on transaction size. Schwartz responded that his team is working on the same protocol, hoping the XRPL EVM is successful. He expressed his desire for the development to compete as another smart contract platform and serve as an alternative XRP ecosystem.

The Importance of Programmability

Additionally, Schwartz explained that programmability is key on the XRPL because it would allow for permissionless customization, letting developers add custom business logic without needing network-wide approval. Schwartz noted that XRP already has built-in native features like the DEX and the AMM that allow users to do almost whatever they want on the platform. However, he acknowledged that the protocol’s current state doesn’t allow for the addition of custom business logic.

The Ripple CTO sees the inability to allow customized business logic as a significant limitation on the XRPL that the programmability feature would solve. Moreover, he believes the ongoing implementation would address a developmental challenge on the XRPL. It would make it simpler to introduce additional features to the protocol, a process that has been difficult to achieve.

According to Schwartz, XRPL programmability will open the door for contributions from users who aren’t sophisticated C++ developers and don’t fully grasp the complex construction of the XRPL software. It would also boost developer engagement by allowing the use of programming languages they are more familiar with, without added complexity.
