According to Global Network reports, an article in the Indian Express titled "Dogecoin is no longer a 'joke currency'" pointed out that two software engineers launched a cryptocurrency - "Dogecoin" (a virtual currency with dog emojis) in 2013. Its emergence signifies the fusion of memes (emojis) and Bitcoin, marking the birth of meme coins. Unexpectedly for the engineers, Dogecoin later became a commonly used online transaction currency amidst jokes. American billionaire Elon Musk expressed his support for it in 2023, after which Dogecoin's valuation soared all the way up. As of January 2025, its market value has reached tens of billions of dollars.
