Ethereum’s (CRYPTO:ETH) Pectra upgrade, which went live on May 7, 2025, introduces Ethereum Improvement Proposal 7702 (EIP-7702), allowing existing user accounts to temporarily function like smart contracts during transactions.

Wallet providers Ambire and Trust Wallet have already integrated support for these features, enabling users to access account abstraction benefits without creating new wallet addresses.

Ivo Georgiev, CEO of Ambire, described EIP-7702 as “the single greatest UX upgrade to Ethereum so far,” highlighting how it brings smart account functionality to existing wallets.

Ambire’s implementation offers cross-chain balance visibility, transaction simulation, scam detection, and integration with decentralised finance (DeFi) aggregators, while maintaining self-custody and avoiding reliance on third-party services.

“Account programmability enables AI agents to act upon your account in the future to enhance your portfolio yield, save your DeFi positions, claim airdrops automatically and more,” Georgiev added.

Trust Wallet CEO Eowyn Chen called the upgrade “the biggest since the merge,” emphasising new features such as paying gas fees in tokens other than Ether and bundling multiple actions like approving and swapping in a single transaction.

Trust Wallet also supports sponsored transactions, where third parties cover gas fees to onboard new users, and automated functions like subscriptions and dollar-cost averaging.

Both wallets have integrated these features into existing accounts, so users do not need to create new wallets or manage new seed phrases.

The Pectra upgrade also includes improvements to staking limits and network scalability, but EIP-7702’s account abstraction capabilities are among the most user-facing changes.

This upgrade aims to improve Ethereum’s usability by making wallets more programmable and flexible while preserving security and decentralisation.

Wider adoption of these features is expected over the coming months as more wallets and decentralised applications incorporate EIP-7702 functionality.

At the time of reporting, the Ethereum (ETH) price was $2,192.76.
