A year ago, Stellantis revealed intentions to launch a 4xe plug-in hybrid version of the Jeep Gladiator in North America before 2025 concluded. However, this electrified Gladiator never reached the production stage.
According to an emailed statement to TechCrunch, the company will now exclude the electrified Gladiator from its Jeep offering as it reevaluates its product roadmap. Stellantis pointed to shifting consumer preferences as the main reason for this move.
“The Jeep Gladiator will maintain its tough look and recognizable design through 2026, while gaining exciting new features directly from the factory,” the statement said. “It remains the sole open-air pickup in the market, blending renowned Jeep 4×4 performance with remarkable day-to-day flexibility. With consumer interest in battery-electric trucks continuing to shift, Stellantis is rethinking its product plans and will not move forward with an electrified Gladiator model. The Jeep brand is redirecting investments to support the long-term success of the Gladiator, planning to add more factory options, customization choices, and new powertrain selections in the near future.”
The Gladiator joins a growing list of electrified vehicles that have been shelved. Just last week, Stellantis announced it would stop development on a battery-electric full-size pickup for its Ram division—a project that was initially part of a strategy to launch over 25 brand-new BEVs in the U.S. by decade’s end.
Limited interest in full-size electric pickups was given as the main factor. Instead, Stellantis now plans to focus on a truck with an extended driving range, estimated at roughly 690 miles, by utilizing a combination of a battery and a gasoline generator—a method that, while uncommon, is not entirely new.
