Sila launches its U.S. manufacturing facility to produce silicon anodes for high-energy electric vehicle batteries

Sila, a company specializing in battery materials, officially launched its operations on Tuesday at its Moses Lake, Washington facility. This plant, which initially will be able to supply battery materials for between 20,000 and 50,000 electric vehicles, stands as the first major silicon anode production site in the Western world. With future growth, it could eventually meet the needs of up to 2.5 million vehicles.

Silicon anodes have the potential to boost lithium-ion battery energy density by up to 50%. Sila has dedicated 14 years to developing this technology, which, according to co-founder and CEO Gene Berdichevsky, may offer the United States its best opportunity to lead in the global battery industry.

“When you create something innovative, it’s much simpler to manufacture it where it was invented,” he shared with TechCrunch.

Sila has already secured deals to provide anode materials to Panasonic and Mercedes. While the primary focus of the new facility will be automakers and their suppliers, Berdichevsky noted that Sila is also supplying drone, satellite, and consumer electronics companies.

Sila is not alone in the silicon anode field. Group14, which also operates in Moses Lake, currently manufactures its proprietary blend at a facility in South Korea built with SK Innovation. Amprius, based in Fremont, produces its material at scale in the U.S. and works with partners in China for larger output.

However, Sila’s Moses Lake plant, which has been under development for almost two years, “is truly the first silicon anode facility in the U.S. designed for automotive scale,” Berdichevsky stated. The company raised $375 million last year to support the project’s funding.

Sila chose Washington State for its facility due to a combination of factors: affordable hydropower, plenty of available land, and proximity to a key raw material supplier.

“The economics of this technology depend on inexpensive energy—one of the main inputs—as well as certain essential precursors, and Washington offers both,” he explained.

The initial production batches from the Moses Lake site will be used to demonstrate to customers that the material matches what they have been testing in recent years, which was previously produced at an R&D line in Alameda.

“We’re very confident in that, but ultimately, the results will speak for themselves,” Berdichevsky remarked.

In the coming years, Berdichevsky said batteries using Sila’s materials are expected to be less expensive than those using graphite anodes from Western sources. (He noted that Chinese manufacturers offer lower prices for graphite anodes, but benefit from significant government subsidies and face fewer environmental restrictions.)

Silicon anodes may also enable carmakers to use less of other costly battery materials, such as nickel, while still maintaining performance. “You get the same performance, faster charging, a domestic supply chain, and lower costs,” he said.

If market demand is strong, Sila intends to grow beyond its Moses Lake location.

“There isn’t a single CEO of a Western car company who doesn’t believe that within a decade, or at most 15 years, nearly all their vehicles will be electric,” Berdichevsky said. “Looking a decade ahead, there could be 10 million EVs in the U.S., so we’ll need several facilities.”

The company also plans to eventually expand into Europe and Asia, but Berdichevsky, who was born in Ukraine, remains firmly committed to the U.S. market.

“If a nation stops manufacturing, where will its sense of pride come from?” he said. “It’s crucial for us as a country to keep building these capabilities and foster an ecosystem so we never fall behind again.”
