Goodnotes, a notetaking application traditionally popular among students, is rolling out new features today aimed at professionals. These updates include a collaborative whiteboard, document creation capabilities, and an AI assistant designed to help users generate and summarize content.
The Goodnotes AI supports multiple input types such as handwriting, typed text, drawings, and voice. According to the company, this assistant can summarize meetings, generate visual aids like diagrams and charts, check written content for errors, and produce templates for both notes and documents.
In the previous year, Goodnotes acquired a South Korean company specializing in meeting and video summarization. The technology from this acquisition now powers some of the latest features.
Image Credits: GoodNotes In addition to AI enhancements, Goodnotes is introducing a whiteboard tool that enables users to work together on a blank canvas, using both text and visuals. The company is also providing new options for users to create documents that can include text, images, GIFs, and tables.
Goodnotes is not the only platform bringing document creation into its ecosystem. Other productivity tools like Grammarly and Canva are also encouraging users to generate documents within their platforms, which gives their AI assistants more context to respond to user questions.
“While students still make up a significant portion of our users, we aim to broaden our product’s appeal, especially for professionals. Text documents are widely used in office environments, and whiteboards are ideal for collaborative work with various tools. Our goal is to become a versatile notetaking solution for any situation and device,” GoodNotes founder Steven Chen shared with TechCrunch during a call.
Image Credits: GoodNotes The company is introducing two new subscription options: Goodnotes Essentials and Goodnotes Pro, moving away from its previous numbering scheme. Essentials is priced at $11.99 per year and offers access to new file types, AI for Q&A, and math features. The Pro plan, at $35.99 annually, includes Google Calendar and OneDrive integration, private link sharing and collaboration, a desktop AI assistant for meeting recording and transcription, and AI-driven content recommendations.
The company notes that even Pro subscribers have a cap on AI usage. For those needing unlimited AI access, an AI pass is available for $10 per month.
There is still a one-time purchase option for Apple device users at $35.99, but this version does not include cloud sync or support across multiple platforms.
Originally launched as an iPad app in 2011, Goodnotes has since expanded to support iOS, Android, and Windows. The company reports having over 25 million monthly active users, up from 21 million in 2023.
