Apple is reportedly close to finalizing an agreement with Google that would have the iPhone company pay around $1 billion annually for a customized version of Google’s Gemini AI model, which would be used to revamp Siri, according to Bloomberg.

This represents a significant shift for Apple, which has historically depended on its own technology but now intends to temporarily utilize Google’s AI until its proprietary system is advanced enough, including for new features planned for its voice assistant.

The tailored AI model boasts 1.2 trillion parameters—a metric indicating its sophistication and abilities—which is substantially greater than Apple’s existing models. For comparison, Apple Intelligence’s current cloud-based version operates with 150 billion parameters, making Google’s offering about eight times more advanced.

Earlier this year, Apple also evaluated AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. After assessing all three, the company decided to proceed with Google’s solution.

Bloomberg notes that the redesigned Siri is anticipated to debut next spring. However, since the release is still several months away, these plans could still be altered.
