Elrond is a protocol that aims to provide Internet-scale blockchain solutions with Adaptive State Sharding and Secure PoS mechanism. These features allow Elrond to be run efficiently on average computers instead of energy-hungry custom hardwares.
Elrond was introduced in 2017 by Benjamin Mincu, Lucian Todea, and Lucian Mincu, all of whom were tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs before Elrond.
The Elrond blockchain is built on two underlying features of Adaptive State Sharding and Secure PoS consensus mechanism.
- Sharding is a technique that partitions data into different parts so that the data can be processed faster. Adaptive State Sharding combines three types of sharding, namely network sharding, transaction sharding, and state sharding, into one. The comprehensive sharding design makes the network highly scalable, fast, efficient, and adaptable while minimizing down-times.
- Secure PoS is an improved version of PoS. Secure PoS together with Adaptive State Sharding allows random selection of validators to happen almost instantaneously. Each chosen validator is then randomly assigned to different shards, and they only need to validate the data on these shards rather than the data on the whole chain.
EGLD (Electronic Gold) is the native token of the Elrond network. Its max supply is 31,415,926, among which 23,519,643.08 is in circulation.
