Kaspa is a decentralized, open-source, and scalable Layer-1 blockchain platform that uses a blockDAG structure to achieve multiple, parallel blocks and instant transaction confirmation. Kaspa operates on a robust proof-of-work engine and aims to achieve one-second block intervals. It has no central governance and follows the principles of fairness and transparency.
Kaspa was created by DAGLabs in 2016.
To understand how Kaspa works, we need to know what blockDAG is first.
A blockDAG is a generalization of DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) to the blockchain concept. Instead of a linear chain, a blockDAG allows blocks to reference multiple previous blocks, forming a more complex structure. This allows for higher throughput and scalability compared to traditional blockchains.
GHOSTDAG (Greedy Heaviest Observed Sub-Tree in DAG) is an efficient algorithm designed for blockDAG-based systems. It helps order the blocks in the blockDAG and determine which blocks are considered valid. By using GHOSTDAG, the blockDAG protocol can achieve consensus and ensure the security and integrity of the ledger. It is a way to solve the computational challenges posed by blockDAGs and make them practical for real-world scenarios.
