The Graph is a decentralized protocol that allows users to store, share, and query data. Blockchain is intrinsically complex, and the act of storing and retrieving data is resource-intensive for a simple dapp, not to mention sophisticated systems like Uniswap or NFTs. Usually this process is done in-house and takes up a lot of computational power and time. The Graph simplifies the indexing and querying of data, making it easier to build, operate, fix, and update dapps.
The platform was created by Yaniv Tal, Jannis Pohlmann and Brandon Ramirez in 2018.
At the center of The Graph's activities is the Graph Node. First, a dapp adds data to the blockchain. Then, the Graph Node scans the blockchain for data that the dapp wants to index. When the required data is found, WASM module will create or update the data accordingly in The Graph's data storage. After that, whenever the app queries the Graph Node for data on the blockchain, data is sent to end-users in user-friendly format.
To keep The Graph running in a decentralized manner, four actors are involved: Developer, Indexer, Curator, and Delegator. They need to deposit GRT, the native token of The Graph, to work for the platform and receive rewards in GRT in return.
The Graph uses GRT as its utility and governance token. There is a total of 10 billion GRT issued, among which 7.4 billion is in circulation.
