Velas is a layer-1 blockchain that is community-driven and user-focused. It was introduced in 2019 by Alex Alexandrov and Farkhad Shagulyamov. The mainnet was launched in 2020. The blockchain claims to be the fastest EVM-compatible blockchain with the ability to process up to 75,000 tps at the cost of $0.00001 per transaction.
Velas is built from two main elements, eBPF (extended Berkeley Packet Filter) from Solana and DPoS consensus mechanism. The former is an architecture-agnostic technology that allows codes to run in a sandboxed virtual machine, making applications both secure and fast. The latter is a consensus mechanism that is more scalable than Proof of Work, more democratic than Proof of Stake, very secure in the event of double-spend attacks, and allegedly the most decentralized consensus mechanism till date.
In Velas, validator nodes do not compete with each other or work alone. They work together in “cluster” with everyone taking turn being the leader, so the network can maintain the integrity of the ledger while securely and efficiently processing transactions.
VLX token does not have a hard cap on total supply. 2,407,157,401 VLX tokens are in circulation.
