Biden: Meta's termination of fact-checking is "very disgraceful"

According to a report by Agence France-Presse on January 11, US President Biden criticized Meta (formerly known as Facebook) on the 10th for terminating fact-checking on its social platform and photo wall in the United States, calling it "very shameful".

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on the 7th that the company will abandon third-party fact-checking in the United States and instead hand over the task of debunking false information to ordinary users. This model is called "community annotation", promoted by social platform X. This decision is widely believed to be aimed at appeasing incoming President Trump.

For a long time, his conservative supporters have complained that fact-checking on social platforms is a means of restricting freedom of speech and censoring right-wing content. When asked about this decision at the White House, Biden told reporters: "I think this is very shameful." He said: "Telling the truth is important." He also stated that this move was "completely contrary to everything America stands for". On January 10th, Brazil demanded an explanation from Meta within 72 hours, including its fact-checking policy in Brazil and how it plans to protect “basic rights” on its platform.
