Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis has asked the U.S. Marshals Service to provide information about the government's sale of 69 bitcoins seized in the Silk Road case.
The senator called the hasty sell-off of cryptocurrency an expression of “political malice” that runs counter to plans to create a strategic Bitcoin -the country's reserve.
This hasty approach during the presidential transition period directly contradicts the new administration's stated goals for creating a National Bitcoin Foundation, said Cynthia Lummis.
She also calculated that the sell-off of government crypto assets resulted in a loss of money that could have gone to the needs of American citizens.
The Democrats' legacy: more than $18,5 billion in lost profits for American taxpayers, the senator wrote on social media.
The idea of creating a strategic Bitcoin -reserve has become widespread around the world. For example, in November 2024, Lummis proposed to the US Treasury to exchange part of the country's gold reserves for bitcoins.
However, the novelty and excessive volatility of digital assets are preventing authorities from considering them as a reserve currency. And yet, analysts are confident that governments of different countries will gradually begin to accumulate Bitcoin , once they realize that not investing in cryptocurrency is worse than the potential risk of owning it.
