Vitalik discusses Ethereum L1 and L2 expansion strategies in his article

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted a blog article stating that Ethereum's goal remains the same as on day one: to build a global, censorship-resistant, permissionless blockchain. After ten years of effort, combining technical and social attributes, Ethereum has demonstrated another important characteristic: it provides useful services for people and can do so on a large scale.

We need to continue building Ethereum's technical and social attributes, as well as its practical utility. I want to focus specifically on an impact that is very important for Ethereum users in the short and medium term: Ethereum's expansion strategy.

Today, L2 faces two main challenges: scale and heterogeneity. A possible shortcut for expansion is to abandon L2, complete all operations through L1, and significantly increase the gas limit (which can be achieved through multiple shards or on a single shard). However, this approach would overly compromise many advantages of Ethereum's current social structure which is highly effective in simultaneously conducting different forms of research, development and ecosystem construction culture. Therefore we should stick with our original route - mainly expanding via L2 but ensuring that L2 truly fulfills its promise.

Native Rollups are still an early-stage idea. There needs to be much proactive thinking especially regarding how to make native Rollup precompiles as flexible as possible.

Now is the time to double down efforts. There are still many areas where proactive thinking and brainstorming are needed. The future of Ethereum depends on everyone’s active participation.
