Disney revealed that "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" will make a comeback after facing intense criticism and a widespread boycott that caused a significant viewership slump. The network’s decision follows growing demands from both viewers and commentators, who argued that the program had included material many found inappropriate. The protest, which broke out in early 2025, reportedly resulted in a 15% reduction in the show’s average audience over three months, as recorded by Disney’s internal figures. The network explained that restoring the show’s usual schedule was a calculated move to regain stable ratings and preserve its prime-time audience base.

The show became a focal point of controversy after a July 2025 segment in which a well-known conservative political leader was ridiculed, prompting swift backlash from conservative lawmakers and media. Detractors described the segment as “polarizing” and “unsuitable for a family-oriented channel,” with more than 100,000 signatures gathered in a petition demanding Disney pull the episode. This uproar unfolded alongside broader societal debates about impartiality in the media, as conservative organizations accused late-night comedians of political bias. The American Conservative Union (ACU) publicly denounced the segment as “an egregious breach of journalistic responsibility” and called for regulatory scrutiny.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also faced criticism for allegedly failing to respond to such programming. In August 2025, 27 Republican legislators sent a letter urging the FCC to investigate "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" and other late-night shows for "fomenting public discord." They contended that the FCC’s current stance on comedy content amounts to a “double standard” compared with the regulations placed on news and public affairs broadcasts. The FCC, however, has insisted that comedic material is safeguarded by the First Amendment and stated it has no intention of changing its present policies.

Following the height of the boycott, Disney’s stock dropped by 4.2% in one week, highlighting investor anxiety about the network’s public image and ad income. The company’s CFO addressed the situation during a quarterly financial report, remarking that the “short-term dip in viewership has led to a reassessment of our content oversight processes.” Since then, Disney has begun working with independent media watchdogs to review upcoming material for “fairness and cultural awareness,” though it has not introduced any substantial editorial reforms.

The reappearance of "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" has renewed discussions around freedom of expression in the entertainment industry. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) expressed support for the show, stating that “comedy is grounded in challenging conventions and sparking conversation.” At the same time, advocacy groups such as the Media Research Center (MRC) have promised to keep a close eye on late-night content, warning that “internal censorship won’t address the larger concerns of media responsibility.” The MRC also plans to launch a publicly accessible database cataloging contentious segments across leading networks.
