UK Electoral Commission Demands Transparency on Crypto Political Donations

  • Reform UK became the first British party to receive a cryptocurrency donation.
  • The Electoral Commission seeks transparent reporting and oversight of crypto-based political funding.
  • Lawmakers and campaign groups are pushing for a full ban on digital asset donations in politics.

The UK Electoral Commission has called for greater clarity in political funding after a political party accepted its first donation in cryptocurrency. The regulator appealed reports that Reform UK received a digital asset contribution that was not declared publicly. Officials and transparency advocates have raised concerns that crypto transactions could bypass traditional oversight rules and expose the political system to potential risks.

According to a report by Observer , Reform UK informed the commission that it had received a cryptocurrency donation in recent weeks. Party leader Nigel Farage had previously mentioned during a Bitcoin conference in Las Vegas that Reform UK was open to crypto funding. The party’s annual conference in Birmingham was also sponsored by several finance groups, including two firms operating in the digital asset sector.

Reporting Thresholds and Regulatory Oversight

Reform UK did not disclose the value of the donation. Under UK law, political parties must inform the Electoral Commission if they receive more than £11,180 centrally. Members of Parliament must declare donations above £2,230 in their registers.

A party spokesperson said all donations above the reporting threshold would be proclaimed through the usual process. The party’s crypto payments were processed by Radom, a platform based in Poland.  The company is not registered or regulated under the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) .

As a result, it falls outside the FCA’s anti-money laundering framework. Radom’s CEO, Christopher Wilson, said the company would align with UK rules once they become law and emphasized that Reform UK remains responsible for compliance with Electoral Commission requirements.

Concerns Over Political Transparency and National Security

Transparency organizations have cautioned that the use of online resources in political financing might trigger gaps in regulations. The executive director of Spotlight on Corruption, Susan Hawley, stated that the situation was a pivotal point in the political financing in the UK . According to her, existing monitoring measures might not be expert enough to monitor anonymous crypto transactions, which would expose them to further foreign influence or financial crime.

The director of the Center of Finance and Security at the Royal United Services Institute, Tom Keatinge, doubts that crypto donations can be regulated with the help of conventional financial controls. He encouraged policymakers to think of temporary restrictions that are in between the time of having appropriate structures.
A cross-party campaign by veteran Labor Party MP Liam Byrne is proposing an outright ban on cryptocurrency political campaign donations . The campaign groups are demanding interim Electoral Commission rules and guidelines in the forthcoming elections bill. According to a spokesperson of the Electoral Commission, no political party has officially reported a crypto donation so far. The regulator reported that the disclosures are quarterly, and it does not publish information ahead of time.
