Middle East conflict spreads to Europe; Eurozone warns of rising "stagflation risk"On the 27th local time, Eurozone finance and economic ministers held a Eurogroup meeting via video conference, focusing on assessing the impact of the current Middle East situation on the EU economy and discussing countermeasures. Participants exchanged views on energy price fluctuations, economic growth prospects, and potential risks. At the press conference following the meeting, European Commission Commissioner for Economic Affairs Dombrovskis stated that the scale and impact of recent conflicts in the Middle East have continued to expand. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is severely obstructed, and attacks on energy infrastructure have led to a significant rise in energy prices. Currently, Brent crude oil prices have remained stable above $100 per barrel for two consecutive weeks. Dombrovskis warned that the escalation in the Middle East has had a clear impact on the European economy. If disruptions to energy supplies persist, it could create a “stagflation risk” for the European economy, facing both slowed growth and rising inflation. If the shock intensifies and prolongs, the EU's economic growth rate in 2026 and 2027 could decrease by 0.6 percentage points.
