Turkey extends stock market short-selling ban to cope with market volatilityGlonghui, March 30|Turkey's Capital Markets Board recently announced an extension of the ban on short-selling transactions in the Istanbul Stock Exchange equity market, with related restrictions to remain in effect until the close on April 10, in response to increased market volatility amid the escalating Middle East situation. The Capital Markets Board stated that the short-selling ban will continue to apply to the entire equity market of the Istanbul Stock Exchange. In addition, according to the regulatory statement, other market stabilization measures introduced alongside the short-selling ban will also remain in place, including a temporary relaxation of equity margin requirements in capital market margin trading. Since the beginning of this year, Turkey's financial environment had been buoyed by expectations of accommodative policies. However, adverse weather causing disruptions in food supply, resurging inflation risks, and ongoing tensions in the Middle East have heightened risk aversion in the markets. As a result, the Central Bank of Turkey announced in early March a suspension of one-week repo auctions, and subsequently kept the policy rate unchanged at 37% at the following rate-setting meeting.
