U.S. congressman questions Meta’s ongoing encryption efforts
According to CoinDesk, Representative Maxine Waters expressed concern in a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg and COO Javier Olivan on Monday about Meta's continued expansion into the cryptocurrency industry, as the company currently has five valid trademark applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).The letter cites Meta's five patents, which include several related to the digital asset field, including social media networks, dating services, cryptocurrency transactions and validation, and more. Although these five applications are still pending, Meta told the Financial Services Committee on October 12 that the company is not currently working on anything related to digital assets.Meta had attempted to launch its own digital currency project in 2019, later named Diem. However, the project was ultimately shut down and sold to the now-defunct Silvergate Bank in 2022.
