South Korea Seeks Do Kwon’s Extradition Through Interpol

  • South Korea has deployed a new strategy to nab Do Kwon.
  • The development comes after Do Kwon won an extradition appeal in Montenegro.
  • South Korea’s government wants him back as his extradition case proceeds to retrial.

South Korea’s National Police Agency has requested Interpol’s intervention in bringing back Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon to the country, where he faces multiple charges over his alleged role in the collapse of cryptocurrencies Terra and Luna.

The development comes after Do Kwon won an appeal on March 5 against a high court ruling that had approved his extradition from Montenegro to the U.S. Citing gross violations of criminal procedures, the Appellate Court of Montenegro overturned the ruling and sent the case back to retrial.

South Korea Turns to Interpol

As the case heads back to a retrial, opening a window for Do Kwon’s extradition to South Korea, the National Police Agency is committed to securing the former Terra executive, just like it did in the case of Terra’s former CFO, who was extradited from Montenegro to the country last month.

Per a local media report , the agency sent a telegram message to the Interpol Secretariat in South Korea on March 7, seeking the organization’s support in extraditing Do Kwon.

“The Ministry of Justice's International Criminal Division and the National Police Agency are working together to repatriate Mr. Kwon through the International Criminal Cooperation Channel and Interpol's International Cooperation Line, respectively,” the report quoted an officer by the name Lee Yong-sang.

While Interpol has yet to respond to the request, the Ministry of Justice expressed optimism about the move, stating that it was looking forward to a “notification” from the organization “when the repatriation decision is confirmed.”

Do Kwon is accused of engineering the “Terra Luna Incident,” which wiped out billions from the global crypto industry and impacted 200,000 victims in the domestic market.
