Josh Stark, a member of ETH Global, posted that because the Ethereum Foundation's recent expenditures have been a topic of discussion, here are some thoughts and answers to some big questions. First off, we're writing a new Ethereum Foundation report covering 2022 and 2023. We hope to release it before Devcon SEA. Here is a preview of the expenditure information in the upcoming report (specific figures to be determined). These charts record both internal and external spending. For example, "L1 RD" includes funding for external client teams as well as internal EF researchers. Over these two years, about 38% was spent internally and about 62% externally. Internal spending includes EF teams such as:

- Geth;

- Privacy Scalability Explorations (PSE);

- Solidity;

- Cryptography research;

- Robust Incentives Group;

- Devcon etc.

All these teams work openly and share their activity information on their websites, githubs and social channels. External spending means grants. Over the past four years we've regularly published reports on EF grant activities at blog.ethereum.org . In the chart I shared above, the largest new category is "New Institutions". A key goal of EF is to help establish new organizations that can strengthen and support the Ethereum ecosystem over time.This category includes grants provided to organizations like:

- Nomic Foundation;

- Decentralized Research Center (@TheDRC_);

- L2Beat (@l2beat);

- 0xPARC Foundation (@0xPARC);

- And other Ethereum-related or adjacent organizations.
