Platform X Government Affairs Team Responds to Brazilian Court Sanctions: Will Not Secretly Comply with Unlawful Order, Will Defend Freedom of Expression
X Platform Global Government Affairs team issued the following statement in response to the announcement that “Brazil's Supreme Court will suspend X's operations in the country by August 29: ”Soon, we expect that Judge Alexandre de Moraes will order the closure of X in Brazil - simply because we will not comply with his unlawful order to censor his political opponents. we will not comply with his illegal order to censor his political opponents. These enemies include, among others, a duly elected senator and a 16-year-old girl. When we tried to defend ourselves in court, Judge de Moraes threatened to imprison our Brazilian legal representative. Even after she resigned, he froze all her bank accounts. Our challenges to his clearly illegal behavior were either dismissed or ignored. Judge de Moraes' colleagues on the Supreme Court were either unwilling or unable to confront him. We absolutely do not insist that other countries have the same free speech laws as the United States. The fundamental problem here is that Judge de Moraes is asking us to violate Brazil's own laws. We simply will not do that. In the coming days, in the interest of transparency, we will publish all of Judge de Moraes' unlawful demands as well as all relevant court documents. Unlike other social media and technology platforms, we will not comply with illegal orders in secret. For users in Brazil and around the world, Platform X remains committed to protecting your freedom of expression.”
