The European Consumer Organization is calling for the EU to take action on digital currency in games
The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) and 22 member organizations from 17 countries called on the European Commission and the Network of European Consumer Authorities (CPC-Network) on September 12 to take stronger enforcement measures against video game companies that maximize consumer spending through the use of in-game digital currency. A report from these two supervisory bodies pointed out that there is an increasing phenomenon of making in-game purchases using in-game digital currencies, especially in free games and children's games, which they say has brought considerable revenue for gaming companies. The consumer protection organization is concerned that these currencies have a dual nature as both digital content and payment methods, which could bring legal uncertainty to the EU.
