Ethereum developers may split Pectra upgrade with February goal

Ethereum developers may split Pectra upgrade with February goal

Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH) developers are considering splitting the anticipated Pectra upgrade into two parts to expedite its release and manage complexity.

The Pectra upgrade, which aims to improve Ethereum's efficiency and scalability, could see its first phase rolled out by early 2025, with developers eyeing February as a potential target for the initial release.

During Ethereum’s execution layer meeting on September 12, an Ethereum developer mentioned, "There is broad agreement that if we split, the idea is that we want to ship Pectra one quicker, or as quick as possible, early next year should be our target."

Another developer agreed, stating, “Feb feels realistic with a split Pectra.”

Developer Danno Ferrin added that splitting the fork only makes sense for a Q1 delivery.

The Pectra upgrade combines two significant changes: the Prague upgrade, which focuses on the network’s execution layer, and the Electra upgrade, impacting the consensus layer.

Splitting the upgrade into two smaller forks is considered safer, as smaller updates generally carry less risk.

However, Ethereum Foundation (EF) researcher Ansgar Dietrichs warned, “I think a split where we still only ship the first half in say June would be a failure.”

Galaxy crypto researcher Christine Kim indicated the chances of a split are “high due to the complexity of the current Pectra fork and the desire to add still more to the upgrade.”

She also noted, "The scope of the Pectra upgrade could change drastically if devs decide to split it across two hard forks."

A final decision on whether to split the Pectra upgrade is expected during the next Ethereum All Core Developers (ACD) call on September 19.

The community has shown optimism, with Ethereum educator Sassal describing Pectra as potentially "the biggest in Ethereum’s history."

The upgrade also incorporates Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3074, approved for the next update.

This proposal allows ordinary crypto wallets like MetaMask to operate with smart contract capabilities, enabling features like transaction bundling and sponsored transactions, similar to the account abstraction introduced in ERC-4337.

At the time of reporting, the Ethereum (ETH) price was $2,346.91.
