Hackers Steal Seattle Airport Documents and Seek $6 Million Bitcoin Ransom, Operator Refuses to Pay

SEATTLE - Hackers have demanded $6 million worth of bitcoin from the operator of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in exchange for documents it stole in a cyberattack last month that were posted on the Dark Web this week, an official at the airport said Wednesday. The Port of Seattle, which owns and operates the airport, has decided not to pay, the official said.

Lance Lyttle, the airport's director of aviation, said the airport had previously linked the attack to a ransomware gang called Rhysida, and now the FBI is conducting a criminal investigation, “On Monday, the hackers posted a copy of eight files stolen from the Port's system on the dark web and are seeking 100 bitcoins to buy that data.”

Lyttle told a U.S. Senate committee that the airport appeared to have stopped the attack, but the hackers were able to encrypt some of the data.
