Microsoft plans to collaborate on restarting the Three Mile Island nuclear power station in the United States, supporting AI business through carbon-free energy
Microsoft has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy Corporation, the owner of Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station, to repair Reactor No.1 at Three Mile Island and establish the "Crane Clean Energy Center". This is part of the tech giant's initiative to power its artificial intelligence business through carbon-free energy. As part of the agreement, Constellation Energy will provide Microsoft with 835 megawatts of electricity and spend approximately $1.6 billion to bring this facility online, aiming to achieve this goal by 2028. Before resuming operations, the deal still needs approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), state officials, and local authorities. It is reported that Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Station is located near Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania, USA. On March 28th,1979 it experienced a core meltdown accident which was rated as level five on an international nuclear event scale system of seven levels. The Three Mile Island nuclear leak incident remains America's most severe nuclear accident so far but compared to subsequent incidents like Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster and Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster; it remained within controllable limits.
