Approximately 3,400 South Korean accounts have invested over 1 billion KRW in virtual assets, with an average investment amount of about 94.5 billion KRW
According to a report by PANews on September 23, citing data from Infomax of the Korean Associated Press obtained by lawmakers of the Democratic Party of Korea from the Financial Supervisory Service, there are approximately 3,400 ultra-high net worth accounts in South Korea that have invested more than 1 billion KRW (approximately $749,000) in virtual assets. The average investment per account is about 94.5 billion KRW ($7.08 million).
In addition, among the 7.7 million virtual asset accounts opened by South Korea's two major cryptocurrency exchanges Upbit and Bithumb, only 1% hold assets exceeding 100 million KRW but they account for up to 70% of total investments. Accounts with investments over one billion won make up only .04% of all accounts but hold a total investment amounting to around 47%, indicating that the cryptocurrency market is even more concentrated than stock markets. Among these high-net-worth accounts, investors in their forties constitute the majority while those in their fifties have an average holding scale at its highest - averaging at about148 billion KRW.
Amongst the16.69 million accounts opened with Upbit and Bithumb less than half (i.e., seven point seven million) are active investing accounts with an average holding amount being eight point nine three million won which translates into a market value equivalent to sixty-eight point eight trillion won when converted into market value terms.
Looking at it from an investment scale perspective: Accounts investing under ten million won make up ninety-two percent of total numbers; these types of account holders' average investment amounts stand at six hundred fifty thousand won.
