US Attorney Damian Williams to resign on December 13
Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has announced his resignation effective December 13, 2024.
Appointed in 2021, Williams has led several high-profile criminal cases, including those against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried and executives from FTX (CRYPTO:FTT) and Alameda Research.
The announcement, made on November 25 by the Department of Justice, confirmed that Deputy US Attorney Edward Y. Kim would take over as Acting US Attorney until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed.
President-elect Donald Trump has indicated plans to nominate Jay Clayton, former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair, for the position.
Clayton, who previously represented firms like Goldman Sachs, has been an adviser to digital asset platform Fireblocks since leaving the SEC in 2020.
His nomination is expected to be part of Trump’s broader approach to financial governance, although the potential changes to crypto enforcement under his leadership remain unclear.
The Southern District of New York holds significant influence in prosecuting financial and cryptocurrency cases.
Williams’ tenure included notable actions such as the prosecution of OneCoin scheme creators.
However, Scott Hartman from the district’s fraud task force stated on November 15 that there may be a reduction in crypto-related enforcement moving forward.
The transition in leadership coincides with ongoing cases, including the trial of former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky, scheduled to begin in January 2025.
While the timeline aligns with Trump’s inauguration, the trial is likely to commence before the Senate confirms a new US Attorney.
