Bitcoin ATM Operator Byte Federal Data Breach Affects 58,000 Users, All Customer Accounts Reset So Far

On December 12, Byte Federal, a large U.S. bitcoin ATM operator, revealed that a recent data breach may have resulted in the personal information of 58,000 customers being compromised. According to documents filed with the Maine Attorney General, hackers attempted to access information such as customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, government-issued IDs, Social Security numbers, transaction activity and user photos.

The security breach occurred on September 30th and was discovered on November 18th. Attackers gained access to Byte Federal's network by exploiting a vulnerability in third-party software located on the popular developer platform GitLab.Byte Federal, which operates more than 1,200 bitcoin ATMs in the U.S., has reset all of its customer accounts and updated its internal passwords to strengthen security measures.
