A Canadian man was forced into hiding due to kidnapping threats, as criminals mistakenly believed he owned billions of dollars in Bitcoin

A moderator of a cryptocurrency forum and father of four claims he was forced into hiding due to threats of kidnapping and abuse aimed at obtaining his Bitcoin.

According to La Presse on Monday, the Canadian man (who did not reveal his name to protect the identity of his children) stated that police told him they could not guarantee the safety of his family. They should move as potential attackers might be associated with organized crime. Since then, the family has decided to constantly change Airbnb residences and live off their savings.

Media reports indicate that two adults were arrested for allegedly planning a kidnapping and possessing illegal firearms, along with two underage suspects. However, these attackers without criminal records were put under house arrest pending trial in March, causing concern for the family's safety. A spokesperson for Quebec police told media: "Part of our job is meeting victims and explaining we can't ensure their safety 24/7." But he didn't directly comment on this matter.

Police investigations revealed that based on social media activity, attackers believed the man owned billions worth in Bitcoin. However, the victim clarified that he only holds about $10,000 worth in Bitcoin.(The Block)
