Indian Railways has announced the issuance of non-fungible token (NFT)-based train tickets for passengers attending the MahaKumbh Mela, a significant Hindu pilgrimage that occurs once every 144 years.

This initiative was revealed on January 13, 2025, through a partnership with Chaincode Consulting, aiming to digitise the travel experience for millions of attendees.

The NFT tickets will be minted on the Polygon blockchain, chosen for its scalability and low transaction fees, which facilitate efficient ticket management.

"By partnering with IRCTC and leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we are enabling a digital-first experience that complements the spiritual and traditional significance of the Mahakumbh while introducing a new level of engagement through NFTs," stated Alok Gupta, CEO of Chaincode Consulting, emphasising the importance of this collaboration.

Daily ticket bookings through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website average around 1.2 million, highlighting the scale of this NFT-based initiative designed to attract global participation.

Aishwary Gupta from Polygon Labs remarked on the role of public blockchains in simplifying transactions and removing intermediaries.

"With its low cost and high throughput, we are sure that the NFTs being issued around Maha Kumbh Mela would be yet another great success," he noted that India's governments have previously utilised Polygon for various initiatives.

The MahaKumbh Mela is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and has attracted notable figures such as Richard Gere and the Dalai Lama in past events.

The upcoming pilgrimage is expected to see attendance from Laurene Jobs, widow of Steve Jobs.

Previously, Indian Railways experimented with NFT ticketing during the Holi festival in March 2024.

These NFTs served as both travel documents and digital souvenirs celebrating India's cultural heritage.
