CFTC plans public roundtables to address crypto market structure
Caroline Pham, the acting chair of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), has announced plans for public roundtable discussions focused on digital asset market structure.
The initiative aims to address various market issues, including conflicts of interest and prediction markets.
In a notice released on January 27, Pham stated that these discussions will take place over the coming months, engaging industry leaders and market participants.
“The CFTC will get back to basics by hosting staff roundtables that will develop a robust administrative record with studies, data, expert reports, and public input,” Pham emphasised.
This approach is intended to create clear regulatory guidelines that promote economic growth and competitiveness in the U.S.
Pham's announcement follows her recent appointment as acting chair after President Donald Trump’s inauguration.
She has been a commissioner since April 2022 and is expected to lead the agency until a permanent chair is nominated.
Former CFTC Chair Rostin Behnam, who stepped down on January 20, will remain until February 7 to assist in the transition.
The CFTC’s authority over cryptocurrency regulation may evolve as Congress considers legislation aimed at clarifying the roles of the CFTC and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
One proposed bill, which passed the House in May 2024, seeks to establish clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets.
Pham has long advocated for proactive regulation and transparency in the evolving crypto landscape.
She noted that innovation has led to new opportunities but also presents risks that must be addressed through careful regulation.
The roundtables are expected to facilitate open dialogue among stakeholders, enhancing the CFTC's understanding of current market dynamics.
Specific details regarding the dates and topics of these discussions will be announced soon.
