Telegram's TON mandate sparks crypto wallet debate

Telegram's TON mandate sparks crypto wallet debate

Telegram is now requiring all third-party crypto wallets integrated with its platform to use TON Connect, the connection protocol developed for The Open Network (TON).

This move, part of Telegram’s partnership with the TON Foundation, effectively makes TON the only supported blockchain network for its messenger services.

Telegram has updated its terms of service to support only crypto wallets connected via TON Connect.

This decision has sparked debate within the crypto community, with concerns over centralisation and reduced interoperability.

Many developers worry that restricting support to TON Connect could limit access to other wallets, reducing competition in the crypto ecosystem.

The TON Foundation clarified that Telegram’s native wallets remain unaffected, as they already use TON and TON Connect for decentralised application interactions.

However, third-party wallets that do not integrate TON Connect will no longer be supported in the future.

Telegram Mini Apps operating on other blockchains must migrate to TON by February 21, 2025.

While this decision could strengthen the TON ecosystem by enhancing security and simplifying integration, it also raises concerns about platform neutrality.

Grindery co-founder and CEO Tim Delhaes compared Telegram’s move to Big Tech practices, warning that it could create monopolistic control over crypto interactions within Telegram.

Launched in April 2022, TON Connect acts as a bridge between wallets and apps on the TON blockchain.

Some Mini Apps, such as Grindery Wallet, have already considered leaving the Telegram ecosystem due to the enforced changes.
