$72,000,000,000 Slashed by Elon Musk’s DOGE? Here’s Every Item Officially Gutted by Trump’s Efficiency Squad
Elon Musk’s contentious Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created by an executive order from President Trump, says it has slashed billions of dollars in spending.
However, to date the agency has not created a way for the public to easily view everything that has been gutted.
Late last month, DOGE said it’s saving about $1 billion per day and the US Debt Clock, which is not affiliated with the government, says DOGE has saved more than $72 billion at time of publishing.
With that in mind, here’s a list of specific items that have been cut to date and verified by the official DOGE account on X.
• $165 million – Termination of 36 consulting contracts across six agencies targeting “strategic communication” and “executive coaching,” including a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contract for “people and culture survey and climate support services.”
• $15 million – Termination of three DEI training grants.
• $45 million – Cancellation of DEI scholarships in Burma.
• $420 million – Cancellation of current and impending contracts, including DEI contracts and unoccupied buildings.
• $250 million – Termination of 199 contracts across 35 agencies, including contracts for climate change services and workshops.
• $110 million – Termination of 78 contracts across DEI, Non-Performing, Media, and Consulting categories, including one for “groundwater exploration and assessment in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.”
• $30 million – Termination of 12 consulting contracts in GSA and the Department of Education, including a $23 million work order for “digital modernization Program Management Office support.”
• $3 million – Termination of 12 underutilized lease cancellations.
Some of the most public and controversial cuts from the Trump administration have been made at the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID), which has reportedly witnessed its staff reduced from thousands of employees worldwide to just 290 foreign service officers and civil servants.
The agency, which was created to promote international development and humanitarian assistance, has been accused by Musk of spending millions of dollars on bioweapons research, attempts to influence news media through government-paid subscriptions, DEI spending and other activities.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt says USAID’s spending also included the following.
• $2 million – Funding for gender transitions in Guatemala.
• $6 million – Funding for tourism in Egypt.
• $20 million – Funding for a new Sesame Street show in Iraq.
• $4.5 million – Funding to combat disinformation in Kazakhstan.
Despite anecdotes on spending at USAID, an official dollar value on cuts at the agency has not been confirmed by the administration or the DOGE team.
DOGE has also touted cuts made by other agencies, such as $4 billion in annual savings at the National Institutes of Health, which lowered the maximum indirect cost rate research institutions can charge the government.
In addition, DOGE detailed $182 million saved by the Department of Health and Human Services, which terminated “administrative expenses” that don’t directly touch health care programs.
Musk also played a key role in the creation of a buyout program for federal workers, which according to Reuters has led to at least 60,000 federal employees preparing to leave in the next eight months.
