$430M Bitcoin outflow ends 19-week crypto inflow streak

Cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs) experienced significant outflows last week, marking the first major sell-off of 2025.

According to a CoinShares report, crypto ETPs recorded $415 million in outflows, with Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) leading the decline at $430 million.

CoinShares research head James Butterfill attributed the outflows to macroeconomic concerns, including US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks about patience on rate cuts and higher-than-expected US inflation data.

Butterfill noted that Bitcoin is highly sensitive to interest rate expectations, leading it to "bore the brunt of investor outflows."

The outflows ended a 19-week inflow streak that began amid optimism surrounding the US presidential election.

This streak had resulted in crypto investment products amassing $29.4 billion, "far surpassing the $16 billion recorded in the first 19 weeks of US spot ETF launches that began in January 2024."

Interestingly, there were no corresponding inflows into short-Bitcoin products, which instead saw outflows of $9.6 million.

Altcoins such as Solana (CRYPTO:SOL), XRP (CRYPTO:XRP), and Sui (CRYPTO:SUI) saw inflows, softening the impact of Bitcoin's decline.

Solana saw the largest inflows of any asset, totaling $8.9 million, followed by XRP at $8.5 million and Sui at $6 million.

According to Bloomberg ETF analysts, there's optimism about potential SEC approval of SOL and XRP ETFs.

They estimate a 75% chance for a Solana ETF and a 65% chance for an XRP ETF in 2025.

Ether (CRYPTO:ETH) ETPs experienced minor outflows of $7.2 billion last week.

January saw strong inflows with $32.8 billion of net new money across the region.

Total Bitcoin ETF and ETP inflows reached $5.25 billion.

At the time of reporting, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $96,177.52.
