Ulbricht supports Ver as he faces $48M tax evasion claim

Ross Ulbricht, the creator of Silk Road, has voiced his support for Roger Ver, also known as "Bitcoin Jesus," after Ver's arrest in Spain on charges of tax fraud.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that Ver evaded nearly $50 million in taxes.

Prosecutors claim Ver underreported his Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) gains and failed to file accurate tax returns after renouncing his U.S. citizenship in 2014.

Ver, however, denies the charges, accusing the U.S. government of overreach.

Ulbricht, who was recently freed after a pardon issued by President Donald Trump, is familiar with the American justice system after serving over 11 years in a maximum-security prison for his role in the online black market.

"Roger Ver was there for me when I was down and needed help. Now Roger needs our support," Ulbricht posted on X.

Ver's tax allegations could result in a 30-year prison sentence.

The DOJ has charged Ver with multiple counts of mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns.

Each mail fraud charge alone carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Ver's defense team argues that the IRS exit tax is unconstitutional and politically motivated.

They claim Ver relied on professional legal advice and acted in good faith.

Ver also alleges that prosecutors withheld exculpatory evidence and improperly interrogated his lawyer.

Ver previously requested President Trump's assistance, claiming to be a "victim of lawfare," as reported by IFC Review.

Ver's legal team has described the charges as illegal and politically motivated.

The Justice Department alleges Ver failed to report significant capital gains from Bitcoin sales and underreported the value of two companies when he renounced his U.S. citizenship.

According to CNBC, Ver's 131,000 Bitcoin holdings would be worth over $7.5 billion, with Bitcoin trading at $57,416.
