Former Congressman Patrick McHenry, who chaired the House Financial Services Committee and advocated for the crypto industry, is joining venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) as a senior advisor.

McHenry announced his new role via an X post on February 26, 2025.

"For too long, D.C. has created barriers for startups and emerging companies. It’s time to level the playing field and ensure that Little Tech — the next generation of builders — gets a fair shot," McHenry stated.

During his time in Congress, McHenry co-sponsored the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21).

This bill, if passed, would provide greater regulatory clarity for digital assets and enhance consumer protection.

McHenry also pushed for legislation to regulate stablecoins in the U.S.

McHenry often voiced his support for the crypto industry and openly criticised the SEC's approach to regulation.

He accused former SEC chairman Gary Gensler of "knowingly misled[ing] Congress when pressed on the classification of #ETH."

A16z, based in Silicon Valley, has invested in companies like Airbnb, Coinbase, Facebook, and Instagram.

The firm also supports the crypto-focused Fairshake super PAC, contributing approximately $70 million in the last election cycle and already dedicating $116 million for the next.

McHenry's move to a16z is seen as a strategic step by the firm to strengthen its influence on tech policy in Washington.

Before joining a16z, McHenry also took on a senior advisor role at payments giant, Stripe.
