Indian town Secures 700K Land Records on Avalanche Blockchain

For decades, residents of Dantewada, India, faced long delays in accessing land records. Verification could take weeks, causing administrative bottlenecks. On March 6, the Dantewada District Administration announced a major digital transformation. More than 700,000 land records have been digitized and secured on the Avalanche blockchain.

The initiative aims to eliminate fraud and ensure transparency in land ownership records. The records date back to the 1950s and were secured in partnership with Indian blockchain startup LegitDoc by Zupple Labs. Officials say the project will streamline property verification and reduce legal disputes.

District Collector Mayank Chaturvedi emphasized the importance of the move. He stated that blockchain technology ensures records are tamper-proof and easily accessible. To further support accessibility, government kiosks have been installed across sub-districts. These kiosks allow citizens and government officers to view land records instantly.

The blockchain-based land record system allows revenue officers to search properties and download ownership documents. The system also includes B-1 forms, rights records, plot registers, and cadastral maps. All smart contracts linked to the records are verifiable through the Avalanche Explorer.

Neil Martis, CEO of LegitDoc, confirmed that the system is permissioned. Only Tehsil-level officers can access and verify land documents. Avalanche India growth consultant Devika Mittal praised the initiative. She stated that blockchain ensures transparency and security for millions of people.

Jayant Nahata, CEO of the Dantewada Zila Panchayat, played a key role in the project. He previously served as Sub-Divisional Magistrate and worked on end-to-end digitization. He noted that securing land records on blockchain reduces legal costs and improves public access.

The initiative benefits tribal communities and farmers, allowing them to secure land ownership rights. It also eliminates manual searches, reducing the time required to verify property details. LegitDoc has supported several Indian blockchain initiatives, including digital caste certificates, diploma verification, and skill certificates. As blockchain adoption grows, more Indian states may explore similar solutions for public record management.
