Survey shows crypto community divided over AI personhood solutions
CoinGecko's recent survey reveals mixed sentiments within the crypto community regarding Proof of Personhood (PoP), a mechanism designed to distinguish humans from AI in digital interactions.
While most respondents agree on the importance of identifying personhood, only 30.3% are willing to adopt PoP measures, highlighting significant ambivalence and opposition.
The survey, conducted among 2,632 crypto users globally, found that 92% of participants consider distinguishing humans from AI at least somewhat important.
Nearly half rated it as "very important."
PoP, which uses verification methods such as biometric data or social media profiles, has gained attention as generative AI and autonomous agents increasingly influence digital spaces.
However, adoption remains limited due to concerns about implementation and privacy.
Sam Altman’s Worldcoin (CRYPTO:WLD) project popularised the PoP concept, but the survey indicates that its current methods face resistance.
While 30.3% of respondents support PoP adoption, 18.3% remain neutral or opposed, citing scepticism about its effectiveness and ethical implications.
The lack of a standardised protocol further complicates acceptance.
CoinGecko’s findings also reflect broader challenges for the AI sector amid declining market interest.
A separate survey highlighted cooling enthusiasm for crypto AI products, with only 46.9% of respondents expressing bullish sentiments for 2025.
The downturn in AI investment suggests that poorly executed PoP measures could alienate users rather than address personhood concerns.
Despite the controversy, experts believe PoP could play a crucial role in safeguarding digital integrity as autonomous agents gain prominence.
“The concept of personhood is becoming critical,” said a crypto analyst, emphasising the need for balanced solutions that avoid heavy-handed approaches.
