According to a report by Bitcoin.com, the cryptocurrency mining company CleanSpark from Nevada has received preliminary support from the local planning committee for its proposed Bitcoin mining data center in Mountain City, Tennessee. Full approval will require completing detailed site planning and reaching a final agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The company’s Chief Operating Officer, Scott Garrison, stated that if approved, the 50.48-acre site could begin operations within two months, using low-noise ASIC mining equipment to avoid air cooling. He emphasized that the noise from the equipment would be similar to that of nearby road traffic, addressing community noise concerns. CleanSpark operates 31 similar facilities in the U.S., with this project initially offering 12 “high-paying” positions that require no specific educational qualifications, with potential further expansion as maintenance facilities are established. The company cited the Georgia project as an example of helping workers improve living conditions. Mountain City Power General Manager Rodney Metcalf also expressed support for the project, noting that its substantial energy demand could help offset “significant” increases in electricity rates. Mayor Jerry Jordan acknowledged the proposal’s potential but expressed dissatisfaction with its planning delays. CleanSpark is awaiting an energy plan decision from TVA in mid-May, and the planning committee will revisit the proposal on May 22.
