Poilievre loses seat as Carney’s Liberals win Canada’s 2025 election

Canada’s 2025 federal election concluded with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party securing enough seats to form at least a minority government, while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre lost his own parliamentary seat.

According to Elections Canada data reported by CBC News, Poilievre was defeated in his Ottawa-area riding of Carleton by Liberal candidate Brunce Fanjoy after a five-week campaign triggered by Carney’s leadership bid last month.

As of midnight Eastern Time, the Liberals held approximately 162 seats, short of the 172 needed for a majority, leaving the possibility that Carney’s government will require support from other parties such as the Bloc Quebecois or the New Democratic Party to pass legislation.

The election was shaped significantly by U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war and threats to Canadian sovereignty, which Carney leveraged by positioning himself as a defender of Canada against external pressure.

Carney, a former central banker with no prior elected office experience before becoming prime minister last month, emphasised national defense and economic resilience in his campaign.

Poilievre, known for his Bitcoin-friendly (CRYPTO:BTC) stance, focused on domestic issues like the cost of living and housing but failed to overcome the surge in national pride fueled by Trump’s aggressive rhetoric.

Unlike recent U.S. elections where cryptocurrency played a notable role, crypto was a muted issue in Canada’s campaign despite Conservative interest.

On Polymarket, a prediction market platform, contracts related to the Canadian election surpassed $100 million in volume, reflecting strong public engagement with the race.

Carney’s victory marks a fourth consecutive term for the Liberals, a rare feat in Canadian politics, and signals continued efforts to diversify Canada’s trade relations beyond the United States.

“We are masters in our own home,” Carney declared, rejecting attempts to undermine Canadian sovereignty, according to CBC.
