SEC Commissioner Peirce Seeks Clear Crypto Laws at Bitcoin Conference

Speaking at the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, Hester Peirce, of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has reiterated the need for better rules on cryptocurrencies. Commissioner Pierce has stated that the SEC needs to make clearer rules about when a crypto deal counts as a “securities transaction” that the SEC regulates.

She clarified that the use of cryptocurrency in a deal is just as important as the cryptocurrency itself. As many cryptocurrencies today might not be securities on their own, but if they are offered to investors in certain ways, like during a company’s initial public offering (IPO) or when turning a company’s stock into digital tokens on a blockchain, at that time, those deals could be considered securities transactions.

The SEC would then need to oversee them to protect investors. Her point is to help people in the crypto world understand what kinds of transactions they need to be careful about to follow the law. Hester Peirce, an SEC official, wants the SEC to make a clear set of rules so the crypto industry knows which transactions they need to follow securities laws for.

This is especially important because more digital assets, like stocks and bonds turned into tokens on blockchains, are coming up, and some of these might count as securities that the SEC needs to regulate.

As per the reports, Peirce thinks there will be more of these kinds of assets in the future, so having clear rules will help the crypto industry grow safely while still following the law.

The new SEC taskforce, U.S. lawmakers, and the government are already working to make America the crypto centre. This is to make sure that it is safe for users to adopt crypto and no one break any laws while still letting new ideas and technology grow in the U.S.

In May 2025, Paul Atkins, the head of the SEC, said that the SEC is working on its first detailed report on the rules for cryptocurrencies. He stated that it will be released within a short time. The SEC is putting in its effort to make clear guidelines for the crypto industry in the U.S. The SEC wants to help the crypto world by encouraging new ideas and by making sure that people who invest in crypto are safe and the market does not become too risky.
