A major judicial operation shakes the French crypto ecosystem. The Paris prosecutor’s office has just charged 25 individuals, including six minors, for their presumed involvement in several attempted kidnappings targeting figures in the crypto sector. Does this offensive finally mark a turning point in the fight against this new form of crime?

In brief

  • Twenty-five suspects have been charged, including six aged 16 to 23.
  • Eighteen people placed in provisional detention by the Paris prosecutor’s office.
  • An investigation focused on the attempted kidnapping of the daughter of Paymium’s CEO on May 13.
  • Recurring profiles: young perpetrators attracted by money and overwhelmed by the situation.

A far-reaching investigation reveals the scope of the phenomenon

The Paris prosecutor’s office revealed on Saturday the conclusion of a complex investigation involving several kidnapping cases linked to the crypto world.

The investigation mainly concerns the attempted kidnapping on May 13 last, when three masked men tried to forcibly take the daughter of Pierre Noizat, CEO of Paymium, in the heart of the 11th arrondissement of Paris. The footage of this attack, which went viral on social networks, shocked viewers by its violence and audacity.

But this attempt is only the tip of the iceberg. The investigation reveals “other unsuccessful plots,” including a first failed attempt against the same targets the day before, as well as a disrupted operation near Nantes.

This series of events is part of a broader wave of attacks hitting the French crypto sector since early 2025.

The profiles of the suspects are as intriguing as they are concerning. Mostly born in the Paris region, these young people aged 16 to 23 come from diverse origins: Châtellerault, Senegal, Angola, Russia.

This geographical diversity contrasts with the homogeneity of their apparent motivation: the lure of easy money in a sector perceived as lucrative.

According to defense lawyers, these profiles reveal “young people attracted by money then caught in a situation beyond their control.” This analysis suggests a well-oiled modus operandi where invisible masterminds manipulate young, inexperienced perpetrators, exploiting their social and economic vulnerability .

A French crypto sector under high security tension

These massive arrests occur within a deteriorating security context for the French crypto ecosystem.

Since January, several personalities in the sector have been victims of kidnappings or attempts, such as David Balland, co-founder of Ledger, who was held captive at the end of January. Authorities now establish links between these different cases, suggesting the existence of one or several organized networks.

In response to this escalation, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau reacted by organizing an emergency meeting with industry professionals . This consultation resulted in concrete measures:

  • Enhanced collaboration with law enforcement;
  • Home security checks;
  • Specialized training for agents.

These initiatives signify government awareness of the specific threats weighing on this innovative sector.

However, Saturday’s arrests concern only “subordinates” and logistical managers, according to sources close to the case.

The real masterminds remain untraceable, fueling fears of a more structured crime than initially estimated. This reality raises questions about the long-term effectiveness of these arrests.

The impact on the French crypto community goes beyond mere security aspects. This wave of violence threatens the attractiveness of a booming sector where France aims to play a leading role in Europe.

In summary, these mass indictments send a strong signal from the French justice system against crime that is corrupting the crypto ecosystem. It remains to be seen whether this crackdown on a criminal network targeting crypto entrepreneurs in France will neutralize the networks sustainably or whether it represents only a temporary victory in a war that seems far from over.
