The license places MoonPay in a restricted group of 34 companies authorized by the NYDFS since the regulatory regime was created in 2015. Among the names that already have this license are giants such as Coinbase, Circle, Robinhood and Ripple, which reinforces the relevance of the authorization for the sector.
Known for its high level of rigor, the BitLicense is considered one of the most demanding regulatory frameworks in the United States. The previous year, only two companies — Anchorage Digital and Cumberland — had achieved approval. For attorney James Murphy, known as MetaLawMan, this is no surprise: “At the time, my firm had a few clients who abandoned the BitLicense application process due to the difficulty.”
In recent years, however, the market has come to view the license as a seal of credibility among crypto service providers. The authorization in New York is seen as a decisive step towards expanding MoonPay's penetration in the US.
The company had already signaled this ambition by establishing its US headquarters in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. The move came after what the company called “the best financial performance in history” in the year 2024. In addition, MoonPay strengthened its payments structure with the acquisition of Iron and Helios, companies specializing in conversion infrastructure between fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies.
With the new license and recent strategic moves, MoonPay solidifies its position as a leading enabler of cryptocurrency access in the United States.
