The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture lawsuit seeking to seize $7.74 million worth of cryptocurrency laundered by North Korean IT workers who fraudulently obtained employment at companies in the U.S. and abroad. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, North Korean IT workers used false or fraudulent identities to gain employment at U.S. cryptocurrency companies, were paid in stablecoins, and then laundered the proceeds through various means before transferring the earnings back to North Korea.
