Iranian Official: Iran Currently Has the Legal Right to Withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
The head of the Iranian Parliament's Foreign Policy Committee stated that, according to Article 10 of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Iran currently has the legal right to withdraw from the treaty. Article 10 of the NPT stipulates that if a signatory determines that extraordinary events related to the subject matter of the treaty have jeopardized its supreme national interests, it has the right to withdraw from the treaty in the exercise of its national sovereignty. The country must notify all other signatories and the United Nations Security Council of its intention to withdraw three months in advance.
