Ledger Launches Physical Recovery Key for Secure Cryptocurrency Backup
- Ledger introduces physical cryptocurrency recovery key
- Recovery Key works with PIN and secure NFC connection
- Seed Phrase Supplemental Backup on Ledger Devices
Ledger announced on Tuesday the launch of the Recovery Key, a physical recovery key aimed at users of its Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax wallets. The new device allows users to restore access to crypto assets with a simple touch and PIN, using the same security technology used in the brand's wallets.
Existing Ledger devices remain unaffected by the new 'Ledger Recovery' feature launch.

Designed to work with a secure NFC connection, the Recovery Key allows users to create physical, offline, PIN-protected backups without relying on intermediaries. The company highlighted that the setup process takes just a few minutes and that the use of the key is optional, and can coexist with the traditional 24-word seed phrase method.
According to Ledger, the growing adoption of cryptocurrencies and the expansion of the sector’s market value highlight the need for modern backup solutions. “Ledger not only offers the best in security, but also the best and most comprehensive set of recovery options,” said Ian Rogers, the company’s Chief Experience Officer. He noted that many investors still hold assets in environments considered less secure, such as exchanges and software wallets.
The launch of Recovery Key complements the Ledger Recover service, introduced in 2023. This service splits and encrypts users’ seed phrases, storing the fragments in separate security modules located in different jurisdictions. Both features aim to increase user autonomy by offering alternatives that can be adapted to different profiles and needs.
Even in the face of criticism regarding the use of personal data in solutions such as Ledger Recover, the company defends the importance of offering choices that keep users in control of their assets. “The physical key and the Ledger Recover service are complementary: you can use either one, both or just your 24 words,” the company reinforced in a statement.
The Recovery Key code has been made available for review along with a whitepaper technical. Charles Guillemet, CTO of Ledger, said that the solution has undergone external audits and internal security testing. The official launch of the device is scheduled for the coming weeks.

From yen rate hikes to mining farms shutting down, why is bitcoin still falling?
The recent decline in bitcoin prices is primarily driven by expectations of a rate hike by the Bank of Japan, uncertainty regarding the US Federal Reserve's rate cut trajectory, and systemic de-risking by market participants. Japan's potential rate hike may trigger the unwinding of global arbitrage trades, leading to a sell-off in risk assets. At the same time, increased uncertainty over US rate cuts has intensified market volatility. In addition, selling by long-term holders, miners, and market makers has further amplified the price drop.
